It was getting late in the winter, in fact it was basically spring and I was wanting to get in a bit of skiing. Finland was a good idea being further north than most of the popular ski resorts, I thought it might be colder. Unfortunately, it wasn't that cold at all and the country itself is quite flat too. Nonetheless, it was a good trip and the sauna's were well worth it.
I believe that I was "unlucky" not to be there in summer as the sauna's would have included a little bit of beating each other with burch twigs. A little strange if you ask me, but when in a foreign country, one must embrace their cultures, so I would have given it a bash if the opportunity had presented itself. Instead, I was expected to go running out into the snow/freezing sea screaming with "delight". This I decided to skip as I already knew what this was like and figured the pain wasn't worth the pleasure.
Helsinki city is quite a beautiful city. There are some amazing buildings there, both ancient and modern. The policing there is quite extreme too, with heavy fines for breaking the law on the road. Everyone it seems drives around trying to avoid the police, whether they are breaking the law or not. The Fins tend to drink a lot too, which is not surprising as I suppose we would all turn to the same device if we only saw 3 hours of sunlight for 75 percent of the year! Nonetheless, they are extremely genuine people and not out to offend anyone. There is a element of serenity about the city permanently.

The ski slopes |
Skiing itself was not the highlight of the trip because the slopes weren't exactly slopes as you can see in the picture. The weather was also a little too warm for the snow and as a consequence, skiing was more like waterskiing in slush-puppie. Still, the beers in the restaurant at the top of the hill was excellent!
