Meribel
Four guys, three South African and one insane Aussie! We left London and flew to Turin in Italy where we rented a car and hit the highways towards the French border. It involved travelling through many tunnels and tollbooths along the way, which was a major cause of concern considering we had no idea of the currencies and how much was needed. After much deliberating, we sought some assistance and made our way to the rental car. Piled high with luggage we made our way out onto the open road with the high expectation of a safe, scenic drive to the ski resort. Unfortunately, we were concentrating very much on the right-hand drive and neglected to notice that the fast lane was on the left-hand side, much to the frustration of many a furious French/Italian drivers. Nonetheless, the journey was otherwise uneventful and we arrived, much to my amazement, in the right place at about midnight!! We unloaded the gear and fought with the door code for about half an hour before finally gaining access to our pretty descent accommodation. Straight to sleep and that was the to-journey.
The next morning, everyone was up relatively early because dinner was a no-show the previous night and the crew was famished. I was selected to gather what I could to throw together for breakfast and thus, off I set. On leaving, I had a strange sensation that something was missing, but ignored it, choosing rather to listen to the other gut feeling. After a hearty traditional French breakfast of French loaf, salami, Pate and cheese, we made ready to set out. Mighty were the preparations and high were the spirits until we realised that the other gut feeling was the missing car. We had inadvertently parked in front of a sign (in French) specifically asking not to park there!! We eventually managed to find the car in a parking lot down the way and the ski trip continued.
